“Leaf-cutting ants (Formicidae: Myrmicinae) have been considered herbivorous generalists; however, some plant species escape their attack because of the presence of secondary metabolites. The main objective of this study was to determine the insecticide effect of foliage extracts of Tithonia diversifolia on Atta cephalotes workers (Hymenoptera: Myrmicinae) and find more define the potential application ways and concentrations. Extracts were obtained from fresh and INCB028050 cell line dry T.

diversifolia foliage, using ethanol as solvent. The principal metabolic compounds were identified and the extracts in three concentrations (0.5 ml/l, 1.5 ml/l, and 3 ml/l) were applied to the ants in two manners: ingestion and contact. Results showed that crude extract of T. diversifolia was toxic to the ants in all concentrations and methods tested; however, dry extracts applied for contact at 1.5-ml/l concentration produced the most efficient toxic effect to A. cephalotes workers. The study contributes to identifying an environmental sound control strategy for the leaf-cutting ant, A. cephalotes. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.”
“This is the case report of a pregnant woman who refused pregnancy termination when diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) functional class 2-3 at the 24th week of gestation and of her newborn. A pregnant woman with PAH functional class 2-3 was treated LY2157299 cell line with inhaled prostacyclin analog ( iloprost), oral sildenafil, oxygen, and low molecular weight heparin. She delivered at 32nd week by Cesarean section. The infant required oxygen up to 36th week postconceptional age and had a short steroid treatment. The mother

needed close cardiovascular monitorization, intensive oxygen and pulmonary vasodilator therapy for 2 months and was discharged with oxygen and oral iloprost treatment. A multidisciplinary approach together with pulmonary vasodilator therapy may be succesful in such a high-risk pregnant woman.”
“The properties of zeolites, and thus their suitability for different applications, are intimately connected with their structures. Synthesizing specific architectures is therefore important, but has remained challenging. Here we report a top-down strategy that involves the disassembly of a parent zeolite, UTL, and its reassembly into two zeolites with targeted topologies, IPC-2 and IPC-4. The three zeolites are closely related as they adopt the same layered structure, and they differ only in how the layers are connected.

“An increasing number of case studies are reporting Glomeromycota molecular diversity from ecosystems worldwide.

Typically, phylogroups that can be related to morphospecies and those that remain unidentified (“environmental”) are recorded. To compare such data and generalise observed patterns, the principles underlying sequence identification should be unified. Data from case studies are collected and systematized in a public database MaarjAM (http://www.maarjam.botany.ut.ee), PD173074 cost which applies a unique molecular operational taxonomic unit (MOTU) nomenclature: virtual taxa (VT) are phylogenetically defined sequence groups roughly corresponding to species-level taxa. VT are based on

type sequences, making them consistent in time, but they also evolve: they can be split or merged, when necessary. This system allows standardisation of original MOTU designations and, much like binomial taxonomic nomenclature, comparison and consistency between studies. Refinement of VT delimitation principles and comparability with traditional Glomeromycota taxonomy will benefit from more information about intra-vs. inter-specific nucleotide variation in Glomeromycota, sequencing of morphospecies, and resolution of issues in Glomeromycota Selleckchem Nutlin-3 taxonomy. As the recorded number of VT already exceeds the number of Glomeromycota morphospecies, designation of species based on DNA alone appears a necessity in the near future. Application of VT is becoming widespread, and MaarjAM database is increasingly used as a reference for environmental sequence identification. The current status and future prospects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) DNA-based identification and community selleck description are presented.”
“Atomic force acoustic microscopy (AFAM), an advanced

scanning probe microscopy technique, has been used to measure local elastic properties with a spatial resolution given by the tip-sample contact radius. AFAM is based on inducing out-of-plane vibrations in the specimen. The vibrations are sensed by the AFM cantilever from by the photodiode signal when its tip is in contact with the material under test. To measure local damping, the inverse quality factor Q(-1) of the resonance curve is usually evaluated. Here, from the contact-resonance spectra obtained, we determine the real and imaginary part of the contact stiffness k* and from these two quantities the local damping factor Q(loc)(-1) is obtained which is proportional to the imaginary part c of the contact stiffness.

“This paper adopts a social constructionist approach to investigate the role

of food in the production of identities and social experiences for men. With recognition that relational and experiential processes are central to men’s lives, the purpose of the paper is to inductively explore the personal and interpersonal complexities of this group’s food related BYL719 supplier behaviours. Empirical data were collected through a series of semi-structured interviews with 33 men, comprising of 4 age groups, (18-35,36-54,55-64, and 65+ years). Regardless of age, an analysis and interpretation yielded three emergent themes, food as a component of: (1) role-play; (2) contextual interactions, (3) and the management

of a functional vs. hedonic dialectic. Across these themes various tensions and contradictions emerged suggesting a complex selleck kinase inhibitor reflexivity to male food life experiences. Relational issues emerged such as the observation that some men concede control to their partners throughout their food experiences. Overall, our men’s consumption practices construct a specific socio-cultural articulation of masculine roles whereby their internal paradoxes are leveraged as a means to produce desirable experiences and self-identifications. “It is as yet unclear whether blood pressure load (BPL) can affect renal function in pre-hypertensive children. We have studied 250 children, with a mean age of 9.12 +/- 3.28 years, with the aim of

assessing if pre-hypertension in children can indeed affect renal function. The study cohort consisted of 146 children with pre-hypertension (group P) and a control group of 104 children with normal blood pressure (group C). All children were tested for orthostatic proteinuria, an exclusion criterion, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and proteinuria, and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring was performed. Based on the BPL, group P was further subdivided into group P1 (BPL a parts per thousand currency sign 40%, low BPL) and group P2 (BPL > 40%, high BPL). We found that GFR was reduced in pre-hypertensive children (90.74 +/- 48.69 vs. 110.32 +/- 20.30 ml/min per 1.73 m(2), Selleckchem MI-503 p < 0.0001) and that proteinuria was increased (145.36 +/- 110.91 vs. 66.84 +/- 42.94 mg/m(2) per 24 h; p < 0.0001). However, mean values were still within normal limits. A comparison of the group with high BPL and that with low BPL revealed that the former had relatively reduced GFR (79.15 +/- 42.04 vs. 96.78 +/- 51.20 ml/min per 1.73 m(2); p < 0.006) and increased proteinuria (198.29 +/- 142.17 vs. 118.31 +/- 80.07 mg/m(2) per 24 h; p < 0.036). In comparison to the reference values of the normal population, the GFR was reduced and proteinuria was increased in the group with high BPL.

“Objective – To evaluate the ability of admission base excess (ABE) to predict blood transfusion requirement and mortality in dogs following blunt trauma.\n\nDesign – Retrospective study 20072009.\n\nSetting – University Veterinary Teaching Hospital.\n\nAnimals SBE-β-CD manufacturer – Fifty-two dogs admitted to the intensive

care unit for treatment following blunt trauma.\n\nMeasurements and main results – Animals requiring red blood cell transfusion (N = 8) had significantly selleck products lower ABE than those not requiring transfusion (N = 44; median base excess [BE]

= -8.4 versus -4.7, P = .0034), while there was no difference in admission packed cell volume (PCV) or age. Animals that died or were euthanized due to progression of signs (N = 5) had lower median ABE than those that survived (N = 47; median BE = -7.3 versus -4.9, P = 0.018). Admission PCV and age were not significantly different between survivors and nonsurvivors. Receiver operator characteristic curve analysis showed an ABE cutoff of -6.6 was 88% sensitive and 73% specific for transfusion requirement (P < 0.001), and a cutoff of -7.3 was 81% sensitive and 80% specific for survival (P < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis

demonstrated that ABE was a predictor of transfusion requirement that was independent of overall severity of injury as measured by the Animal Triage Trauma (ATT) score, but a similar analysis showed that only ATT was an independent predictor of survival.\n\nConclusions – The ABE in dogs with blunt trauma was a predictor of mortality and blood transfusion requirement within 24 hours.”
“A stem canker disease was observed on the phoenix trees located in the region of Dezhou, Shandong province. Symptomatic stems were collected and evaluated for the possible casual agent of the disease. A fungus resembling Fusarium sp. was consistently isolated from pieces of symptomatic tissues. The fungus formed BIIB057 abundant aerial mycelium on potato dextrose agar and produced the micro- and macro-conidia on carnation leaf agar. The nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer of the rDNA from three representative isolates showed 100% identical to those of Fusarium oxysporum isolates deposited in the GenBank database. On the basis of morphological characteristics, pathogenicity test and molecular identification, the causal agent was identified as F. oxysporum. To our knowledge, this is the first report of stem canker on phoenix tree caused by F. oxysporum in China.

“Among the numerous emerging biomarkers, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and growth-differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) have received widespread interest, with their potential role as selleck chemicals predictors of cardiovascular risk. The concentrations of inflammatory biomarkers, however, are influenced, among others, by physiological variations, which are the natural, withinindividual variation occurring over time. The aims of our study are: (a) to

describe the changes in hsCRP and GDF-15

levels over a period of time and after an episode of non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) and (b) to examine whether the rate of change in hsCRP and GDF-15 after the acute event is associated with long-term major cardiovascular adverse events (MACE). Two hundred and Fifty five NSTE-ACS patients were included in the study. We measured hsCRP and GDF-15 concentrations, at admission and again 36 months after admission (end of the follow-up period). The present study shows that the change of hsCRP levels, measured after 36 months, does not predict MACE in NSTEACS-patients. However, the level of GDF-15 measured, after 36 months, was a stronger predictor of MACE, in comparison to selleckchem the acute unstable phase.”
“One of the most important obstacles to overcome in biocatalysis with monooxygenases is the enzyme’s dependency on the costly redox cofactor Sapanisertib NAD(P)H. Electrochemical

regeneration systems, in which an electrode serves as electron donor, provide an alternative route to enzymatic redox reactions. Mediators are often used to accelerate electron transfer between electrode and enzyme. We investigated the mediated bioelectrochemical conversion of p-xylene to 2,5-dimethylphenol (2,5-DMP) by a P450 BM3 variant and were able to produce 2,5-DMP electrochemically. Due to the fact that mediator reduction is limited by the electrode surface a scale-up was performed. However, increasing the electrode surface area to reactor volume ratio led to a drastic increase in cathodic oxygen reduction, causing a drop in product formation. It was shown that reduced cobalt sepulchrate reacts with the co-substrate oxygen. Furthermore, the reportedly oxygen stable mediator [Cp*Rh(I)(bpy)H](+) was compared to cobalt sepulchrate. While its turnover frequency is of comparable magnitude to cobalt sepulchrate when transferring the electrons between electrode and enzyme, using NADP(+) as intermediary between the mediator and the enzyme significantly increased the mediator’s turnover frequency. The rhodium mediator [Cp*Rh(I)(bpy)H](+) does not appear to be significantly more oxygen stable. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

1). In female patients older than 4.5 months of age, there was also a trend toward smaller ICV in patients with the combined form than in those with sagittal synostosis alone (p < 0.1), and the ICV of patients with the combined form was significantly

smaller than the volume in controls in the same age group (p < 0.05). Brain tissue volume was significantly smaller in both patient groups than in controls (p < 0.05). Ventricular volume was significantly increased (compared with controls) only in the patients with isolated sagittal synostosis who were younger than 4.5 months of age (p < 0.05). Overall CSF space, however, was significantly larger in both patient groups in patients younger than 4.5 months of age (p < 0.05).\n\nConclusions. These findings raise concerns about intracranial and brain volume reduction in patients with sagittal and combined AZD7762 manufacturer metopic and sagittal synostoses and the possibility that this volume reduction may be associated with brain dysfunction. Because the ICV reduction is greater CT99021 in vivo in combined metopic and sagittal synostosis in patients older than 4.5 months

“This study reports on controlling the formation of nanoimpurities on suspended graphene to investigate the inelastic scattering of electrons using a two-phonon Raman process. Results were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning Raman spectroscopy in the same region of suspended graphene. The findings revealed that the area with a higher concentration of impurities shown in the TEM image corresponds directly to the area with a lower integrated intensity and a wider full width at half maximum in the Raman mapping of the 2D band and vice versa. The same trend is also apparent in the 2D and D+D bands.

In conclusion, the results are explained by an increase in the electronic scattering rate due to impurities, which affects two-phonon Raman scattering. Combining the TEM image Danusertib in vivo and Raman mapping image effectively demonstrates how electron behavior is affected by the distribution of impurities in graphene systems. “Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease in which disability progresses over time. Progressive forms of MS have a poor prognosis, are associated with greater levels of disability and, unfortunately, are unresponsive to current treatments. Here, we have reviewed the management of 100 patients with MS. The majority of these patients had progressive disease, Expanded Disability Status Scale ‘scores >6, and extensive medical complications. A significant number of patients in this cohort were also treated with MS disease-modifying agents that lack efficacy in patients with progressive disease.

There was an interaction between PTSD and comorbid depression (P < 0.05) in men and women, indicating that the effect of PTSD and comorbid depression on T2DM differed. When the analyses were stratified by depression status, among non-depressed group, individuals with PTSD had a higher prevalence

of T2DM compared with those without PTSD [APR = 1.47 (95% CI, 1.15-1.87) in men and APR = 1.27 (95% CI, 0.97-1.66) in women]. Among the depressed individuals, however, there was no association between PTSD and T2DM [APR = 0.87 (95% CI, 0.43-1.76) in men, and APR = 1.00, (95% CI, 0.54-1.83) in women]. Conclusion:

The findings suggest that history of PTSD is related to high levels of T2DM among asylum seekers independent of comorbid depression. Clinicians and policy makers need to take PTSD into account when assessing and treating diabetes among vulnerable migrant populations.”
“A cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the seroprevalence and risk factors associated to Bovine Herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) infection in non-vaccinated dairy and dual purpose cattle herds from Ecuador. A total of 2367 serum samples from 346 herds were collected from June ABT-263 research buy 2008 through February 2009. A questionnaire, which included variables related to cattle, health, management measures and environment was filled out in each herd. “Aims: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major public health problem around the world. The C677T and A1298C polymorphisms of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene have been reported to be associated with T2DM and its complications. This study aimed to investigate this association in the Moroccan population. Methods: A case-control study was performed among 282 Moroccan diabetic patients and 232 healthy controls. The MTHFR C677T and A1298C polymorphisms were genotyped by CYT387 purchase polymerase chain reaction, followed by enzymatic digestion with HinfI and MboII enzymes, respectively. Results: There was a significant association between C677T polymorphism and T2DM in both additive and dominant models. In addition, the 677T allele frequency differed

significantly between the diabetic and control groups (26.06% vs. 33.20%, respectively). However, no significant association was found between A1298C polymorphism and T2DM. The frequencies of combined genotypes 677CC/1298AA and 677CT/1298AC differed significantly between the diabetic and control groups (32.62% vs. 20.61% P505-15 mouse and 9.57% vs. 17.55%, respectively). Conclusions: These results show an evident association between the MTHFR C677T polymorphism and T2DM in Moroccan patients but no significant association with the MTHFR A1298C polymorphism.”
“The effect of hot deformation induced defects and texture on thermoelectric properties of FeSb2 bulk crystals has been investigated.

The transport properties of the samples along both parallel and perpendicular direction of pressing were measured from 3 K to 300 K. The results showed that thermal conductivity of the deformed samples was significantly NVP-BSK805 clinical trial reduced. After twice deformation, the thermal conductivity of the sample along the perpendicular direction of pressing was decreased to 4 W/mK, which was only one third of that before deformation. Transmission electron microscopy observation revealed the presence of high density of lattice defects in the deformed samples. The lattice thermal conductivity was analyzed using the Debye-Callaway approximation, and the results showed that the deformation induced lattice imperfections play an important role in enhancing phonon scattering. In addition, both the electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient exhibited a weak anisotropy in the deformed samples. The figure of merit ZT of the bulk FeSb2 was significantly improved from 0.010 to 0.021 after deformation. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Colocalization analysis suggested that fibronectin was a uniquely

Colocalization analysis suggested that fibronectin was a uniquely distributed matrix protein. Morphology, three-dimensional matrix adhesions, and integrin-mediated signaling during vasculogenesis were then studied in human endothelial cells seeded onto the fibroblast-derived matrix. Elongated morphology and decreased cell area were noted, as compared with cells on fibronectin-coated coverslips. Cell-matrix adhesions contained vinculin,

pY397-FAK, and pY410-p130Cas, and all of these colocalized more with fibronectin than tenascin-C, collagen 1, or collagen VI. Additionally, the endothelial cells remodeled the fibroblast-derived matrix and formed networks of tubes with demonstrable lumens. Matrix adhesions in these tubes also predominantly colocalized with fibronectin. The selleck pattern of membrane type Combretastatin A4 1 matrix

metalloprotease expression in the endothelial cells suggested its involvement in the matrix remodeling that occurred during tubulogenesis. These results indicated that information in fibroblast-derived matrix promoted vasculogenic behavior. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.”
“Background The purported advantage of lightweight large-pore meshes is improved biocompatibility that translates into lesser postoperative pain and earlier rehabilitation. However, there are concerns of increased hernia recurrence rate. We undertook a prospective randomized clinical trial to compare early and late outcome measures

with the use of a lightweight (Ultrapro) mesh and heavyweight (Prolene) mesh in endoscopic totally extraperitoneal (TEP) groin hernia repair.\n\nMethods A prospective study was performed on 402 patients (191 in Ultrapro and 211 in Prolene group) with bilateral groin hernias who underwent endoscopic TEP groin hernia repair from March 2006 Compound C price to June 2007. All operations were performed by five consultants following a standardized operative protocol. Chronic groin pain and hernia recurrence were evaluated as primary outcome measures. Secondary outcome measure were early postoperative pain, operative time, number of fixation devices required to fix the mesh, return to normal daily activities of work, seroma, and testicular pain.\n\nResults At 1-year follow-up, incidence in Ultrapro versus Prolene group for chronic groin pain was 1.6% vs. 4.7% (p = 0.178) and recurrence was 1.3% vs. 0.2% (p = 0.078). In Ultrapro versus Prolene group, mean visual analogue score for postoperative pain at day 7 was 1.07 vs. 1.31 (p = 0.00), mean return to normal activities was 1.82 vs. 2.09 days (p = 0.00), and mean number of fixation devices per patient required to fix the mesh was 4.22 vs. 4.08 (p = 0.043).\n\nConclusion Lightweight meshes appear to have advantages in terms of lesser pain and early return to normal activity. However, more patients had hernia recurrence with lightweight meshes, especially for larger hernias.
